The tests say I am positive .....

I had a genetic test done in July to see if I am a carrier for the gene that causes cancer. They came back positive for the BRCA2 mutation. I am not really sure what it all means except that I have to keep an eye on my kids, daughter especially, but I know that men can get breast cancer as well, so I will watch my son closely too.  I know that they will be fine tho. The nurse said that my sisters (2) my mom and my brothers (4) need to get tested as well. I am not sure if they will or not, but I definetly will make them aware of the odds for them or their daughters of perhaps getting this..... So since they say I am positive, they say that I have a higher chance of getting cancer in my left breast and/or ovarian cancer. I have to take another blood test in three months to see if I am in menopause and depending on the results of that test, the docs will decide if they want to remove my ovaries or not and possibly a left mastectomy.... I guess we will take it as it comes.... I still have my breast reconstruction to finish up, but am NOT expecting any complications from that....

I am getting ready to do a 3.5 mile walk for the American Cancer Society called Making Strides for Breast Cancer.  I have about 14 friends walking with me, so we decided to "team" it and so the team name is "Alicia's Breast Friends" It should be fun. It takes place on October 14, 2006. My goal, one of these days to to do the 3 day walk here in Michigan...someday I will.... for now small steps... like I said; I am feeling great now and am on the road to recovery..... I am planning on being around to see my two wonderful children grow to become responsible adults, watch them marry the spouse of their dreams, and watch their families grow....also 50+ years of marriage to my, oh, so wonderful husband!!! Thanks so much for reading my story..... don't forget to read my ending notes...... thanks again.
