Genetics and Family History

I luckily happened to find a Breast Surgeon who was also a genetic counselor.  We started to discuss my family history and whether or not I wanted to have genetic testing to find out whether I carried a specific genetic mutation for breast cancer, BRCA1 or BRCA2.

I decided to take the blood test.  The results arrived in about 3 weeks.  On Valentine's Day of 2006, I was told that I was positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation.  This was not good.  This meant that I had an almost 90% chance of getting breast cancer again and an almost 50% chance of getting ovarian cancer.  This was frightening.

How did I get so lucky?  Why was I the only one who had this?  Where did it come from?  We were overwhelmed but determined to take on a new plan of action.
